For the second consecutive year, the Universidad Autónoma de Nuevo León carried out the Environment Week from June 1 to 7, 2020, in the framework of the celebration of World Environment Day, which takes place every year on June 5th.
On this occasion the academic activities of celebration were carried out in a distance modality, due to the conditions imposed by the health contingency caused by the COVID-19 disease.
World Environment Day is the most relevant date on the United Nations Organization calendar to promote environmental awareness and action at a global level, over the years this date has become a powerful platform to promote actions and sensitize millions of people, as well as their governments in more than 150 countries, to take action on the most pressing environmental challenges facing the planet.
In 2020 the theme assigned to the celebration of World Environment Day was Biodiversity, a major cause of global concern in environmental matters. Recent catastrophic events such as the large-scale forest fires in Brazil, California, and Australia, the locust invasion in the Horn of Africa, and the COVID-19 pandemic demonstrate that Nature is sending us an urgent message.
On Friday, June 5th, the Environmental Week at UANL 2020 came to an end reaching the objectives that were set for it, to call on the university community and society to care for and respect the environment, the industrial sector to continue developing friendly models with the environment, to the governments to redouble efforts in the protection and conservation of the natural areas and the biodiversity that inhabits them.
Throughout the week, 17 events were held which began with the message of the President, M. Rogelio Garza Rivera sent to summon us to become aware of the importance of the environment, in particular biodiversity, in addition to endorsing the UANL’s commitment to continue working for the benefit of the environment and sustainability.
Additionally, the following academic events were held:
2 Conferences given by experts from our institution.
1 Dialogue in which a representative of the civil groups promoting sustainability in Nuevo León participated.
2 Workshops given with the support of the National Commission for Protected Natural Areas and the Bird Museum, in which mainly young people from student associations related to sustainability issues participated.
And a keynote lecture given by PhD. José Sarukhán, CONABIO National Coordinator.
In addition, various video capsules were published on social networks by Sustainability Secretariat (SS) of UANL, in which we were able to meet some of the associations of student groups that work for the environment and sustainability, and others where we are given advice on how to care for the environment. If you have not seen any of these activities yet, we invite you to do so, they are on our social networks and website.
The records expressed by social networks and the SS-UANL loading website show the interest that the university community and society have on the environment:
On Facebook during the call period and the week if they have registered a little more than 180,000 reaches so far.
The videos that have been published have so far been played more than 15,000 times.
The UANL Sustainability Web page (sds.uanl.mx) registered approximately 90,000 visits in that period.
That is, as a whole, the social networks and Web page that the Sustainability Secretariat administers registered more than 250,000 visits and scopes.
And for all this to happen, the Project Development Direction team worked intensively to carry out a wide and diverse call for topics, supported by a very comprehensive dissemination campaign that included the publication of more than 120 posters and videos on social networks and website, achieving the objective of capturing people’s interest in this topic.
We thank everyone for their enthusiastic participation and invite them to take care of the environment throughout the year!
