Reflections on environmental policy in Mexico

Dra. Julia Carabias Lillo, Faculty of Sciences of the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México

What is sustainable development?

The concept of sustainable development is the result of concerted action by nations to promote a model of global economic development compatible with environmental conservation and social equity.

Since the emergence of the concept of sustainable development, various initiatives have been launched to achieve the objective of reorienting the current development model, among which they stand out for their importance:

The United Nations Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), which emerged as a result of the United Nations Millennium Summit held in September 2000 in New York.

Technical Guidelines

This is how university students can demonstrate the high responsibility of being part of the solution of environmental pollution, working to combat the great problems that affect the human beings of our community, in our country and in the world.
A series of recommendations are established that aim to make an efficient use of energy, which in turn reduces the environmental impact produced by energy consumption, in addition to promoting economic savings.
Set of recommendations that aim to reduce water consumption, through its efficient use.
Recommendations are established to reduce the consumption of materials and consumables, and if they are purchased, consider their reuse or proper disposal to contribute to caring for the environment.
Measures that allow maintaining the health of the soil avoiding its degradation or depletion, the effects of which have negative consequences on its ecosystem functions, food security and human well-being.
Recommendations oriented to the conservation of natural environments that provide a set of essential goods or services for human life and are the basis for the economy.
Recommendations for the planning, construction and operation of buildings taking into account existing natural elements, with the aim of reducing negative environmental impacts.
Set of measures aimed at preventing, reducing or maintaining occupational accidents and diseases related to the workplace in acceptable levels, safeguarding the well-being of people and the environment.
The sustainability guide for Workshops and Laboratories is established in collaboration with researchers, officials, teachers and administrators of each academic unit to develop and implement sustainable practices and the use of technologies that increase efficiency, reduce energy consumption and conserve resources in laboratory buildings on all university campuses.
