Information and Communication Technologies has been incorporated not only as an important educational tool, but also as a catalyst of digital education which is defined as “the education modality where students and professors are linked through different ways and methods of communication in order to facilitate the transmission of knowledge and opening dialogue between both parts”.

According to the United Nation Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) some of the main objectives of digital educations are: to provide equal opportunities for access to education, cover the demand for education in those places where classroom education is not possible, due to the lack of physical, economic, and academic resources. Open access modalities for people in need due to economic or geographic constraints. The reinforcement of a lifelong learning process which could lead people to meet the challenges of our world with updated information and alternatives, and respect the needs, conditions and individual interests of each participant.

In a sustainable society the use of natural resources must not exceed its rate of renewability, so that the areas subject to exploitation can recover their original state naturally, which means using less to produce the same. In this framework, digital education is part of, contributing to the construction of a more sustainable society, where instructional design promotes teaching and learning processes through ICT with a high quality education, without requiring the construction of infrastructure used in face-to-face mode, in addition to promoting an adequate use of energy, materials, fuel and time for the benefit of the institution and students.

During 2017, a total of 8,545 students completed university studies enrolled in any of the Digital Education programs currently offered at the UANL, among which are the general baccalaureate in 2 high schools with general high school distance and 17 high schools with general mixed baccalaureate; At the top level, 4 complete programs are offered (Bachelor’s Degrees in Exercise Science, Law and Criminology, Nursing and Psychology) and at the graduate level, 3 complete programs are offered (Master’s Degree in Physical Activity and Sports, Nursing and Teaching Sciences). Medium superior level).

UANL has an institutional platform that promotes the use of ICT and Learning Technologies in educational processes:

Nexus: A virtual platform that facilitates collaboration between students and teachers in the teaching and learning process in face-to-face, distance and mixed modalities, which in 2017 served 152,141 students.

VirtUANL: Online Learning system that allows students to choose one of the modalities offered, having the option to combine two of them, which can be classroom instruction or distance learning, in accordance with their needs and priorities. They will access to academic courses  at anytime and anywhere from a PC, Tablet or Smartphone.

Environmental benefits of Digital Education Program

UANL Digital Education program besides contributing to the training of human resources required for the economic and social development of the State of Nuevo Leon, this program supports one of the primary objectives of sustainable development which is to ensure the acces to a high quality and inclusive education for any person regardless of their economic and social status.

Additionally, the ED program prevents the generation of Greenhouse Gases (GHG), thanks to the fact that students enrolled in the program avoid moving, using automotive vehicles that work with fossil fuels, to university campuses to receive academic instruction. to generate important savings of electric energy that is used in the artificial lighting and air conditioning of the classrooms, additionally they generate savings in the use of gas and water.

In 2017 it is estimated that thanks to the Distance Education program, the UANL stopped emitting 7,990 tons of CO2 equivalent, which allowed it to lower the carbon footprint generated by the completion of its academic activities. This is despite the fact that their student enrollment continues to grow year after year.
