Information and Communication Technologies has been incorporated not only as an important educational tool, but also as a catalyst of digital education which is defined as “the education modality where students and professors are linked through different ways and methods of communication in order to facilitate the transmission of knowledge and opening dialogue between both parts”.
According to the United Nation Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) some of the main objectives of digital educations are: to provide equal opportunities for access to education, cover the demand for education in those places where classroom education is not possible, due to the lack of physical, economic, and academic resources. Open access modalities for people in need due to economic or geographic constraints. The reinforcement of a lifelong learning process which could lead people to meet the challenges of our world with updated information and alternatives, and respect the needs, conditions and individual interests of each participant.
Moreover, a sustainable society must promote the use of natural resources only under its rate of renewability, so that areas subject to exploitation can recover their original state naturally, which means using less to produce the same. In this context lies the importance of digital education contributing to a sustainable world, where instructional design is conducive to teaching and learning through ICT with the same quality as classroom education, but without construct buildings and optimizing the use of material and human resources.
