Last Friday, November 8, the municipality of General Escobedo, in the state of Nuevo León, was the scene of the Environmental Fair, an event dedicated to promoting the appropriation of public space by society, in areas of ecological interest. The fair took place in the Jardines del Canadá Wetland, a natural area that represents a key point for conservation and ecological balance in the region. The initiative was organized jointly by the Project Development Directorate of the Sustainability Secretariat of the Autonomous University of Nuevo León (UANL) and the Secretariat of the Environment of the Municipality of General Escobedo.
The fair was designed as a space for coexistence and learning, where activities focused on caring for the environment and the conservation of natural resources were highlighted. More than 150 students from elementary, middle and high schools located in the municipality of General Escobedo participated, as well as around 80 members of more than 20 UANL student associations linked to sustainability issues, who offered workshops, conferences and exhibitions on relevant topics such as climate change, biodiversity and the importance of preserving wetlands, due to the multiple environmental benefits they offer, such as water capture, maintenance of local biodiversity, oxygen production, among many others.
During the event, attendees had the opportunity to participate in interactive activities that promoted environmental education. Some of the most popular workshops included topics such as recycling, reforestation and urban agriculture, all focused on providing practical tools to adopt more sustainable lifestyles. In addition, guided tours of the wetland were conducted, where ecology experts explained the local flora and fauna, highlighting the importance of conserving these types of ecosystems in urban areas, as they help mitigate the effects of urbanization on biodiversity.
It is worth noting that during the event, Mr. Andrés Mijes, mayor of General Escobedo, was present. He toured the stands in order to learn about the activities that were carried out and to express the municipality's support in all actions aimed at promoting environmental care, in addition to thanking the attendees for their participation. According to Dr. Carlos Ramírez, director of Project Development of the UANL Sustainability Secretariat, the fair also aimed to strengthen the link between citizens and nature, promoting a culture of responsibility and respect for the environment.
This edition of the fair was especially relevant, given the context of the global climate crisis and the specific environmental challenges facing the state of Nuevo León, such as water scarcity and air pollution.
The event also served as a platform for collaboration between educational and government institutions on sustainability issues. The UANL Sustainability Secretariat pledged to continue supporting projects with environmental impact in the region, reaffirming the university's mission as a promoter of initiatives to benefit the community and the environment. Likewise, the municipality of General Escobedo stated that it will continue working on the creation of educational spaces and events such as this fair, which allow citizens to become informed and participate in concrete actions to improve their environment.
The Environmental Fair at the Jardines del Canada Wetland was not only an informative event, but a comprehensive experience that inspired attendees to reflect on the impact of their daily actions on the environment. At the end of the day, the participation of citizens left a clear message: commitment to the environment is a shared responsibility that, through joint efforts, can contribute to creating a sustainable future for future generations of Escobedo and Nuevo León.
