10th Photography Contest “In the Spotlight of Sustainability” Awards Ceremony

In Mexico, waste management remains one of the greatest environmental challenges, despite efforts to reduce its impact and promote more sustainable practices. According to the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (SEMARNAT), in 2020, the country generated more than 38 million tons of urban solid waste, of which more than half ended up in landfills without adequate treatment. This problem not only affects the environment, but also public health and the well-being of communities.

One of the main challenges of waste management in Mexico is the lack of adequate infrastructure for recycling and waste treatment. Despite having regulations and programs such as the General Law for the Prevention and Comprehensive Management of Waste, many of the initiatives at the local level are not implemented efficiently, and recycling remains a rudimentary practice in many regions of the country.

However, in the midst of this panorama, art has become a powerful tool to raise awareness. For this reason, the Sustainability Secretariat of the Autonomous University of Nuevo León (UANL) is organizing its tenth photography contest “In the Sights of Sustainability”, whose central theme was “Actions to improve urban waste management”.

The Project Development Department is responsible for disseminating the call throughout the period in which it is open, in addition to receiving and systematizing the works, in order to be able to present them appropriately for the deliberation process to be carried out and, finally, being responsible for carrying out the award ceremony.

The competition sought to encourage young people to reflect and make visible the concrete actions that can be carried out to improve waste management in urban areas, through photography.

The period in which the call for applications was open was from March 22 to October 15 of this year, and 174 students from the following university departments participated:

  • Faculty of Visual Arts
  • Faculty of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering
  • Architecture Faculty
  • Communication Sciences Faculty
  • Faculty of Public Accounting and Administration
  • Faculty of Civil Engineering
  • Industrial School and Technical Preparatory School “Pablo Livas”
  • Preparatory School 25
  • Preparatory School 8
