Since 1995, the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) established the Conference of the Parties (COP) where countries, regional organizations and non-state actors meet annually in order to talk, negotiate and agree. collaboratively the actions that will be carried out to address climate change.
In 2022, COP27 was held in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt, from November 6 to 18, where it mainly addressed a review of the commitments established at COP26, ranging from addressing the climate emergency to seeking to achieve support countries to commit to complying with the Paris Agreement.
In the rounds of ministerial negotiations, it was mentioned on several occasions that the objective of avoiding an increase in global temperature to 1.5 oC, proposed in the Paris Agreement, is very far from being met, despite the fact that there is a large number of public policy instruments and the fact that various actions are being carried out to achieve this objective; However, the results that have been obtained so far are still not satisfactory.
According to the United Nations Organization, the discussions were not entirely hopeful because the progress is not positive, calling on the negotiators to beyond showing progress in the speeches, these are reflected in the action and implementation of measures that contribute to the care of the planet.
Among the main agreements reached at COP27 is that for the first time, providing financial support to developing and developed countries with losses and damages due to climate change is added to the agenda; in order to help populations whose lives have been affected by extreme weather events.
It was agreed to launch the Santiago Network for Loss and Damage, to catalyze technical assistance to developing countries that are particularly vulnerable to the adverse effects of climate change.
On the other hand, a transition committee was established, whose task is to issue recommendations on the agreements regarding funds for the next conferences of parties, scheduling the first meeting for the end of March 2023.
Another relevant result was the announcement of the Sharm el Sheikh Adaptation Program whose objective is to promote a low-carbon economy to contribute to improving life in climate-vulnerable communities by 2030.
Following up on the commitment made since COP26 in Glasgow, the Alliance of Leaders for Forests and Climate was launched so that governments, businesses and community leaders together can contribute to stopping the loss of forests by 2030. these ecosystems as well as land degradation.
These are the most relevant results that will serve as a guide for global action against climate change, which shows that we still have a lot to do at a collective and individual level, actions that can be evaluated at the next COP28 to be held in United Arab Emirates, but mainly it is necessary to show positive impacts at an environmental, economic and social level.
Let's not let time pass anymore, it's time to take action towards sustainability!
