The Autonomous University of Nuevo León (UANL) reaffirms its leadership in sustainability by being recognized, for the eighth consecutive year, as the most sustainable university in Mexico. In addition, the institution reached the 16th position worldwide and the second place in Latin America, according to the results of the 2024 edition of the prestigious Green Metric World University Ranking.

The results, released on Thursday, December 12, 2024, at the University of Sao Paulo, Brazil, highlight UANL's efforts in implementing sustainability practices and policies. This ranking evaluates more than 1,400 universities around the world on criteria such as green infrastructure, energy management, waste treatment, sustainable mobility, education and environmental research.

Dr. med. Santos Guzmán López, rector of the UANL, has emphasized on multiple occasions that “the UANL commitment to sustainability not only responds to a global demand, but also to our responsibility to the society around us and the future of the planet.”

With this distinction, the UANL reaffirms its commitment to sustainable development and the formation of a university community that is more aware and responsible about the values and tasks of sustainability. The position achieved in this ranking also consolidates it as a regional reference, strengthening its prestige at a national and international level.

Since its first appearance in the Green Metric World University Ranking, UANL has shown continuous improvement in each of the categories evaluated. The institution has invested in green infrastructure, optimization of energy consumption and renewable energy projects. Highlights include initiatives such as the installation of solar panels, comprehensive waste management and the promotion of sustainable mobility.

The Green Metric Ranking, created in 2010, has become a global reference for measuring universities' commitment to sustainability. This year, UANL ranked above leading universities in Europe, Asia and North America, consolidating its position as one of the main exponents of environmental education worldwide.

UANL's sustainability strategy also includes the development of an environmental culture among students, teachers and administrative staff. The university has implemented environmental education programs, discussion forums on climate change and applied research projects that seek solutions to global environmental problems.

This recognition not only positions UANL as a leader in Mexico, but also places it at the forefront in Latin America. The institution has become a model to follow for other universities in the region that seek to adopt sustainable practices and contribute to the fulfillment of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) of the United Nations (UN).

With this new distinction, the UANL reinforces its vision of the future as a world-class university committed to sustainable development. Global environmental challenges require decisive action, and the UANL has demonstrated, once again, that it is up to this challenge, leading by example and serving as an inspiration for the international educational community.

We thank all the members of the university community who work daily to make the goal of moving towards a sustainable way of life possible!
