Electronic waste

The special management waste (SMR) are the materials generated in the production or service processes and do not meet the characteristics to be considered urban solid waste or hazardous waste. An example of RME is Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) (televisions, cell phones, computers and household appliances). , among others), these wastes are composed of hundreds of different materials, both valuable (gold, silver, palladium and copper) and potentially dangerous (lead, cadmium, mercury and arsenic) which can be accidentally released into the environment during disassembly. and represent a danger to human health and the environment if disposed of incorrectly.

According to the Report on the Situation of the Environment in Mexico 2018, in 2013, approximately 1.3 million tons of WEEE were collected in Mexico and from 2013 to 2017, 2.17 million cellular devices have been collected, which represented a total of 325,095 tons of cellular equipment, plus 633,701 tons of accessories such as chargers, external batteries, memories, cables, among others.

Aware of the problem mentioned above, the UANL, through the SS, disposes of WEEE in an appropriate manner with a company authorized by the Environment Secretariat of the State of NL. In the UANL electronic recycling campaigns of June and October 2022, 35.70 t de RAEE generating important environmental benefits such as 834,902 kWh of unconsumed electrical energy and 131 t of CO2 not emitted into the atmosphere.
