Award ceremony of the 9th Photography Contest “In the sights of Sustainability”

Air quality is related to the existence of pollutants in the air environment, worldwide the presence of this type of substances causes it to not be entirely favorable, which is why it is necessary to take measures that lead us to provide a solution to this environmental problem. with direct effects on public health. There are different sources of air pollution, including meteorological events, geographical characteristics and human activities such as the burning of fossil fuels.

In this context, with the objective of involving the student community in activities that promote the transition of the Autonomous University of Nuevo León (UANL) towards sustainable development, the Secretariat of Sustainability through the Project Development Directorate, has promoted by nine consecutive years the realization of “In the Sights of Sustainability” photography contest, which in 2023 had as its theme “Actions to improve air quality”, with the objective of raising awareness among members of the student community about the importance of participating in solving problems that we face as a society, because in the state of Nuevo León, specifically in the city of Monterrey and its metropolitan area, in recent years high concentrations of particulate matter in the air have occurred on more days.

The period in which the call for the contest remained open was from March 21 to October 31 of this year, and had the enthusiastic participation of 586 students, assigned to the following university departments:

  • Faculty of Visual Arts
  • Faculty of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering
  • Architecture Faculty
  • Faculty of Nursing
  • “Pablo Livas” Industrial and Technical Preparatory School
  • High School 25 Escobedo “Dr. “Eduardo Aguirre Pequeno”
  • High School 15 UANL

At a meeting held on Monday november 15, 2023 at the facilities of the Research Center for Sustainable Development of the UANL, the jury made up of the Mtra. María Enríquez Rodríguez, Comprehensive Ecological Committee; he M.C. Luis Rodrigo Fortuna Martínez, professor at the Faculty of Architecture and the Arq. Félix Alfonso Torres Gómez, Regional History Information Center, held the deliberation of winners in the presence of the Dr. Sergio Fernández Delgadillo, head of the UANL Sustainability Secretariat, electing a total of 23 photographs as finalists, applying as criteria the theme of the work and the mastery of photographic technique.

The works that were finalists were announced on Monday november 27, 2023, through the social networks associated with the Secretariat of Sustainability (Facebook UANL Sustentable and Instagram uanlsustentable), with the award ceremony taking place on Wednesday, December 6, 2023, in the Multiple Use Room of the Research Center for Sustainable Development of the UANL.

During the celebration of the event, in which the 23 semi-finalists participated, as well as the members of the jury, the Dr. Sergio Fernández Delgadillo announced the names of the three contest winners:

First place: for Uriel González Leija from the Faculty of Nursing, for the photograph titled “Apoyo uno a uno”, equipped with a Cámara SONY Digital ZV-1F and diploma..

Second place: for Carlos Beltrán Acosta from the Faculty of Visual Arts, for the photograph titled “Ahorra”, equipped with a DJI Mini SE drone with 2.7K camera and diploma.

Third place: for Yazmín Montserrat Capetillo Castillo from the Faculty of Visual Arts, for the photograph titled “Vida dando vida”, equipped with a Cámara de acción DJI OA-2 and diploma..

Additionally, the names of the participants who qualified for the award were announced. Honorable Mention who were given the corresponding diploma and a gift:

The holding of the photography contest “In the Sight of Sustainability” during this year, showed the great interest and sensitivity that students have about the air quality crisis in Nuevo León, providing reflections on the causes and effects of this serious problem and some proposed solutions to it through his works.

We appreciate the enthusiasm of the participants in the contest and all the people who made it possible, and we call on the members of the university community to continue working diligently so that the UANL continues to be the “Most Sustainable University in Mexico.”
