Responsible Consumption Program
The Responsible Consumption Program at the Universidad Autónoma de Nuevo León (UANL) is an institutional strategy aimed at promoting sustainable consumption habits among members of the university community through actions focused on reducing resource consumption, minimizing waste, and efficiently utilizing materials and energy. Through this program, the UANL promotes practices that help reduce the institution’s ecological footprint and strengthen social and environmental responsibility across various university spaces.
Key initiatives include reducing the use of single-use plastics, cutting back on paper and natural raw materials, promoting waste separation and responsible waste management, and encouraging reusable alternatives with lower environmental impact. These measures help reduce the generation of highly polluting waste and foster a culture of rational resource use.
In addition, the UANL has improved access to potable water by installing and operating public drinking fountains supplied by water treatment plants on various university campuses. At Ciudad Universitaria, this program has significantly reduced the consumption of bottled water in PET containers, thereby decreasing the generation of plastic waste and promoting more sustainable consumption habits among students, faculty, and administrative staff.
In 2025, the 64 public drinking fountains installed at Ciudad Universitaria recorded a consumption of 3,234,678 of potable water, preventing the use of 6,469,256, 500-milliliter plastic bottles. This initiative yielded significant economic benefits for the university community, generating estimated savings of approximately $5,632,056.00 million dollars annually for users.
Likewise, from an environmental standpoint, the program prevented the generation of 78 tons of PET waste and reduced the demand for space allocated for final disposal in landfills, in addition to decreasing emissions associated with the production, transportation, and sale of bottled water. Through this, the UANL strengthens its efforts to mitigate climate change and conserve natural resources, promoting a more responsible and conscious consumption model.
The Responsible Consumption Program also contributes to strengthening ethical education and environmental awareness within the university community by encouraging reflection on the impact of consumption decisions on the environment and society.
